In memory of Mark Patterson

Mark Patterson, the artist of the controversial Encinitas “Surfing Madonna” mosaic, passed on Sept. 20 of this year.
Mark has been a dedicated member of our Encinitas Christian Science Society from its early days. As a dedicated life long Christian Scientist he has contributed so much to our church and our community. Here is an example of his writing.

Praying lets me glimpse that if God really is Love, and if God really is power, and if God is really actively present in our lives, then I can be a witness to that. I cling to this idea. You could say I “stand still” with it, because it is a solid Biblical truth. Not an “if it’s right it’ll work out” kind of thing. No. Solid. It helps me actively look and see what Love has prepared for us, right here and right now. That’s all I need to do: just see what Divine Love has prepared for us……

Here is one such post from someone who knew Mark very well:
Heard about Mark’s passing a few days ago. Sadly, I had not been in touch with him in years. I remember hearing about him some years ago when his art mural made the news all over San Diego County. I had not even known that Mark was a fine artist. Mark never boasted about his talents to me. Though he had many. I believe at one time he worked with some other local Christian Scientists at a computer firm called DataTrek which was located on Saxony Road in Encinitas, which as I recall was where former Encinitas Church members, Fern and Ralph Ritchie used to have their home.
I first met Mark when I was a Sunday School student at the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Encinitas, when it was still located at the corner of Encinitas Boulevard and Balour Drive. It was a pretty large Church edifice with a good-sized Sunday School and Childcare. The Church had once been located west of Highway 101. It was moved to the aforementioned address.
Mark was always very kind to me. He had a ready smile and a great laugh. As I recall, he was pretty well thought of by the bulk of the membership. He was a great organist. I think he held the position for quite some time. Rick Froese was First Reader sometime during the years that Mark played the organ. The Froese family were also good friends with our family, as were many of the Encinitas Church members. Encinitas Church used to have membership picnics onsite at the church, and I think even a barbecue or two at one of the local beaches-probably Moonlight Beach, or perhaps Cardiff Reef. Mark also came to our family’s home for various celebrations. As I recall, he was there for my High School graduation party. As were many of the Encinitas Church members and Sunday School students.
Mark told me a funny story about his first Sunday morning, or perhaps Wednesday evening, as organist at Encinitas Church. As I recall the story, he had gotten to church early, to practice before the service, and had gotten quite comfortable sitting at the organ. He had taken off his shoes, and was immersed in his practicing. When he was through practicing, he decided to leave the auditorium and go out into the foyer/entryway. So, he’s strolling leisurely up the side of the auditorium thinking that it was still early. He then notices the auditorium is pretty full of people, and they are looking strangely at this new guy strolling around the church in his stocking feet! I had not thought of the story in a while, and I treasure the memory of Mark’s sharing. He told it with a smile and chuckles.
Mark’s presence in our world is dearly missed. I find comfort in a passage a Christian Scientist friend shared with me a few years ago:
“Where God is we can meet, and where God is we can never part.”

Encinitas Holiday Street fair Today, November 19, 2023
Sunday, November 19th, 2023Come and join the Fun!
We need volunteers, Sunday school teachers, and or just come and be a part of the scene!
The Reading Room will be open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on today, Sunday, November 19, 2023, during the Encinitas Holiday Street Fair. Parking is tight so it might be a good time to take the train! Come by and say hi if you can.
We will have a treasure hunt called “The God’s name game” in our Garden where the kids search for the seven synonyms for God. In our textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy she defines God in the glossary as:
God. The great I AM; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence.
So we place the names: Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love around the garden to be found by the seekers. Come by and join the fun and win a prize .

Be a part of this exciting event by sponsoring the kids. Our goal is to collect enough donations to give out a shirt to every youth who participates.
At these Street Fairs we have had over 600 people come through our garden and into our Reading Room made up of children and adults chaperoning the children and individuals without children and many with dogs. After the children fill out the God’s Name Game card with the synonyms for God they turn it into the Reading Room to win a prize. If they take the T shirt challenge and can memorize all seven synonyms, they will get the free T-shirt as a prize. So please support this great CS Sunday school activity and outreach to our community with the “power of Truth” and the “worthiness of Love”.

October the 31st can conjure up many images and emotions, but at the Christian Science Society of Encinitas Reading Room, we take this opportunity to reach out to the community and bless big and small with a stroll through the Garden of the Great Spirit. Last year’s event had another very large attendance, from both repeat guests that were delighted to be greeted again by friendly faces and big smiles as they made their way through the decorated garden, as well as first time visitors looking in wonder as they read signs of Truth and Love and met with costumed greeters. One such visitor approached to say,
“ I really feel the Spirt here” For many, it may be their first introduction to knowing God is Love, and for others it may just be a peaceful respite from what can be a frightening evening, but everyone who came through expressed gratitude either by word or smile.
Some stopped to ask questions about Christian Science, some took literature, but most of all it blessed the community with sharing messages of Truth and also a little fun and a sweet treat. Come and experience it for yourself this Halloween, as we will be back to welcome all to the Garden of the Great Spirit once again.
Also, put Sunday, November 19th on your calendar this year to come to the Reading Room to volunteer, participate, or just take in the vibe of the day at your local community Christian Science Reading Room as it opens up for the day during the Encinitas Street fair. When you come, you will find that we are not just passive observers of the event, but instead an active focal point where we interact with the fair 
goers as they flood through our gate and into the garden to play the God’s name game.
Over the years we have become one of the fair’s most popular events with hundreds of kids and their parents in tow entering the Reading Room garden to play this game and have a day of Christian Science Sunday school learning the 7 synonyms of God as expressed in the Christian Science text book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
Please come and be a part of this community event. If for some reason you can not attend but would like to support our event, you may do so by sponsoring 10 kids with their T-shirt prize that they receive after completing the game. The cost for a sponsorship is $100 for 10 kid’s, or however more or less you want to sponsor as the Spirit moves you. To donate please click here.

The Garden of the Great Spirit October 31st 2023

Andrew returns to San Diego after his last visit ten years ago to share his much beloved
hymns and songs from his newly released CD called “Home”. Please join us in showing our
love, support and appreciation for Andrew and his music and in Christian Science Community
fellowship.
