Sara was nominee for Best Singer-Songwriter at the 2017 San Diego Music Awards. She takes her inspiration from nature and the nearby ocean, always writing outdoors, where inspiration can strike at any moment, and usually does. “I’m fueled by nature. When I’m writing or wandering the woods or the beach I can hear the whisperings of my heart. There are melodies in nature and I scoop them up and take them home.”

Also join us before she plays at 6:00 for a gratitude//Testimonial meeting.  Testimonial meetings are similar to the Sunday services, but the Scriptural selections are customized to the needs of the congregation and occasion.  You’ll also hear fellow attendees share insights, experiences, and healing they’ve had as a result of their prayer and study of Christian Science.  The readings will be on overcoming adversity

Every Wednesday evening most Christian Science churches or Societies come together to hear and share how they were healed and their life made better through the application of Christian Science.  This will be an example of one of those meeting tomarrow tonight

This is a video example of what you might hear at a Christian Science Testimonial meeting.

Meet Rick. A growth appeared on his body, and so he decided to pray about it as he’s done throughout his life studying Christian Science. Within days it completely disappeared.

A free talk and lunch downtown San Diego Tuesday, November 6th, 2018

Enrique Smeke, CSB (Christian Science Teacher.

My father came home late one day. At dinner he told us how he learned at a lecture that Christian Scientists heal themselves through prayer. That night, a question he wrote in his youth on the margins of a book, “Does God really exist?” had finally been answered.

I started attending Sunday School at age 9, and made Christian Science my own at 17, when a diagnosed rheumatic fever required that I restrain from all physical activity for several months. Those months of persistent study and prayer led to a healing, and showed me the unlimited possibilities before us, as we know God, and ourselves as His image and likeness.

After taking college courses in engineering and journalism, and also working in the textile industry in Argentina and Chile, I decided to get more involved in the healing activity of Christian Science.  I applied to take Christian Science nursing courses, which showed me, as nothing else had before, God’s healing power. Later, I completed my college degree at Principia College and then applied to work at The Mother Church. Years later, I started the Spanish radio edition of The Herald of Christian Science.

My practitioner’s listing in The Christian Science Journal in 2007 was a natural step after having been taking practice cases for several years. Now, having taken Normal class in 2012, I teach the spirit and the letter of this marvelous Science, which for years has been opening my eyes to the laws and blessings of divine Love.

Virtual reality – “You simply can’t believe how much your brain is being tricked. … Each layer, your brain gets more deeply and deeply fooled”

September 29th, 2018

From the July 7, 2014 issue of the Christian Science Sentinel

Virtual reality is an amazing technology. This was confirmed recently in a broadcast on US National Public Radio that got my attention. It showcased technology that monitors the motion of your head, tracks your eye movements, and puts compelling graphics on a screen that fits into goggles. The company that makes this technology added audio through headphones, and a platform and a fan for motion simulation.

The report also included some startling comments from one of the designers, who said the technology allows us to “finally trick people into believing that they’re in a virtual space, instead of just watching what happens through a window.” He added, “You simply can’t believe how much your brain is being tricked. … Each layer, your brain gets more deeply and deeply fooled, and it just kind of makes you either smile or maybe let out a little yelp.”

Human consciousness is easily tricked! But we don’t have to allow ourselves to be fooled if we know the truth stated unequivocally by Mary Baker Eddy in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Mortal belief is a liar from the beginning, not deserving power” (p. 296). With that thought in mind, one might say that what the technologists are calling virtual reality, Christian Scientists would call virtual unreality.

Human consciousness is easily tricked!

If one wants to be freed of sickness or addiction or disability, one must begin to understand the reality of infinite, all-powerful divine Principle, God, and demonstrate this freedom. Focusing on and examining matter more and more intensely only ties us to unreality. Mrs. Eddy puts it this way: “Unless the harmony and immortality of man are becoming more apparent, we are not gaining the true idea of God; and the body will reflect what governs it, whether it be Truth or error, understanding or belief, Spirit or matter” (Science and Health, p. 324).

When the Apostle Paul was preaching all night and Eutychus fell three stories, Paul embraced Eutychus and reassured bystanders: “Trouble not yourselves; for his life is in him” (Acts 20:10). Paul was not fooled by the virtual reality the crowd saw. It’s likely he focused boldly and persuasively on the realities of the kingdom of God. When Paul left, the crowd accepted the reality that Paul had known all along: Eutychus was alive!

This healing process is explained in a passage in Science and Health in which Mrs. Eddy explains that “… the only reality of sin, sickness, or death is the awful fact that unrealities seem real to human, erring belief, until God strips off their disguise. They are not true, because they are not of God” (p. 472).

The reporter on that NPR segment, at the end of her time with the virtual reality equipment, said: “I saw troops heading toward the wall with torches. They started to shoot fiery arrows, and suddenly I was hit. It didn’t hurt, but the experience was more real than any I’ve ever had with a book, movie, game, or TV.” The unreality certainly appeared real—except that she couldn’t be hurt by arrows because there weren’t any!

Understanding and setting aside the misconceptions provoked by virtual reality helps free us from the limits of the material senses. As long as we are using those senses—perhaps aided by a virtual reality mask or powerful telescopes or microscopes—we are limited to what astronomers call our “observable universe.” As the astronomers hint, there is something more. The Science of the Christ, revealed by Mrs. Eddy, demonstrates that the “observable universe” is not reality. It appears to be real only because we are not removing the masks that complicate our human experience.

“To remedy this,” writes Mrs. Eddy, “we must first turn our gaze in the right direction, and then walk that way. We must form perfect models in thought and look at them continually, or we shall never carve them out in grand and noble lives” (Science and Health, p. 248).

Mrs. Eddy continues: “Let us accept Science, relinquish all theories based on sense-testimony, give up imperfect models and illusive ideals; and so let us have one God, one Mind, and that one perfect, producing His own models of excellence” (Science and Health, p. 249).

Then we’ll be fully equipped to challenge the senses that tell us that we are too young to accomplish a task or too old to take on a new challenge; that we are sick or have made irredeemable mistakes; that we are underemployed or overworked; that war is inevitable or peace unachievable. When we take off the virtual-reality or virtual-unreality mask, we find ourselves at the “point of perfection” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 242)—not short of it or beyond it, not above it or below it, but right at the exact point.

Real manhood – “When he asked male cadets at West Point to define a “good man,” they listed such virtues as honor, integrity, duty, sacrifice, and willingness to stand up for the weak. Then he asked them to describe a “real man,” and the answers were quite different: to be tough and powerful, win at all costs, play through pain, and focus on getting rich and pursuing pleasure.”

September 22nd, 2018

By Leslie J. Revilock

Amid continuing revelations of sexual harassment and assault, there has been much discussion about masculinity. An article in The Christian Science Monitor late last year reported that, according to Michael Kimmel, founder of the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook University in New York, men are grappling with conflicting concepts of what it means to be a man (“In the #MeToo era, what does it mean to be a ‘real man’?” Dec. 26, 2017).

When he asked male cadets at West Point to define a “good man,” they listed such virtues as honor, integrity, duty, sacrifice, and willingness to stand up for the weak. Then he asked them to describe a “real man,” and the answers were quite different: to be tough and powerful, win at all costs, play through pain, and focus on getting rich and pursuing pleasure.

Professor Kimmel helps men sort out the differences between these two versions of manhood and put their focus on being the good man. This gave me a clue as to the need not only to expand our sense of what it means to be a good man, but also to totally redefine what a real man is.

Pondering the professor’s questions myself, I considered the idea that the way to resolve conflicting concepts of manhood is to reach higher – to gain a spiritual understanding of man as created in the image and likeness of God.

Christian Science teaches that God is the sole creator of the universe, including generic man – both male and female – and that man reflects God’s goodness. In “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,” Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer of Christian Science, asks, “What is man?” Her three-page answer includes this statement: “Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique. He is the compound idea of God, including all right ideas….” It also contains references to “the real man.” She says, for example, that “Truth and Love reign in the real man, showing that man in God’s image is unfallen and eternal” (see pp. 475-477).

Love – a synonym for God – maintains its unfailing, tender care of man and all creation. Divine Love is expressed in spiritual power, love, health, and holiness. And Truth – another synonym for God – is expressed in wisdom, purity, and spiritual understanding. This spiritual likeness of Truth and Love is the real man, the true, spiritual identity of each man and woman.

This means we are all innately capable of thinking and acting from a higher sense of manhood than the material concepts of man embedded in current culture and regularly depicted in the media. The character of the man who understands and lives his real, spiritual selfhood includes humility, empathy, kindness, and forgiveness. Far from weakening his masculinity, these qualities strengthen and expand his expression of manhood, harmonizing his interactions with others.

Demonstrating the activity of pure good inherent in each of us involves letting divine Truth and Love fill consciousness and guide one’s thoughts and actions. The nature and thought of the real, spiritual man are expressed humanly as we are receptive to divine inspiration. As our perception of what we truly are as God’s reflection becomes clear, our inclinations to dominate, harass, or abuse others are annihilated. We are helped in this progress when we realize that God’s sons and daughters are complementary, not competitive or predatory. They enhance and enrich each other.

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way,” the Bible says (Psalms 37:23). This is the starting point for discovering and demonstrating true manhood. It has the power of God, Truth and Love, behind it. And in truth, the good man is the real man – spiritual, strong, loving, complete, and content.

Adapted from an article published in the Sept. 3, 2018, issue of the Christian Science Sentinel

Each weekday, the Monitor includes one clearly labeled religious article offering spiritual insight on contemporary issues, including the news. The publication – in its various forms – is produced for anyone who cares about the progress of the human endeavor around the world and seeks news reported with compassion, intelligence, and an essentially constructive lens. For many, that caring has religious roots. For many, it does not. The Monitor has always embraced both audiences. The Monitor is owned by a church – The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston – whose founder was concerned with both the state of the world and the quality of available news.
