Have you ever faced a physical challenge that felt insurmountable? When a mountain biking accident left Marsha with significant injuries, she had a choice: focus on the pain or focus on the healing power of God.
Read all about it in her latest article from the August 11, 2025 Christian Science Sentinel entitled:
Effects of accident overcome

No amount of darkness can extinguish light. Likewise, nothing can separate us from God—our source of light, peace, joy, and healing.
Years ago, I experienced clear proof of this. Lying in a small bunk on our boat, I found myself in terrific pain, praying for a message from my Father-Mother God. A recent mountain biking accident had left me with injuries that affected my ability to breathe and digest food. We had only two weeks before charter guests were to arrive for our next journey on the boat.
As I turned my thought to God, I realized that what was truly vital was not my physical condition but my understanding of my spiritual identity. I knew that, just as the moon has no light of its own but reflects light from the sun, my being was a reflection or expression of God—of divine Life, Truth, and Love. I had had numerous healings through applying the teachings of Christian Science, applying the law of Truth, Life, and Love to each challenge with confidence and success. So in that moment, I affirmed that God was right there with me, enveloping me in His love. I could never be separated from His tender care.
Over the next two weeks, I was surrounded by love and support. My husband cared for me tenderly, singing hymns, cooking, praying, and talking with me about God’s goodness. We read the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, from cover to cover while we swayed at anchor in a secluded bay. A Christian Science practitioner provided daily metaphysical treatment, affirming the truth that eliminated fear.
One Sunday we joined a service at a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, on a nearby island. The warmth of the members and the healing presence of the Christ—God’s message of love and comfort—embraced us and gave me confidence in my conviction regarding my wholeness as God’s child.
It then came to me that when clouds obscure the moon, they may appear to be between the moon and the sun. But this is only our limited perspective. The clouds are merely within Earth’s atmosphere—far below the moon, which continues to reflect the sun’s light, unaffected by the clouds we are seeing.
Similarly, when difficulties seem to block our spiritual light, we must remember that they are only illusions, incapable of altering divine reality. The Christ is always present, always shining with divine light.
One morning, light streamed through the boat’s window, and I saw my image in the glass. As the boat swayed, my image shifted. At times, I could see only a part of myself, but I knew my face was still there. I did not question its existence simply because I could not see it in full.
Likewise, the fact that we might not currently be perceiving God’s whole, active, pain-free child does not mean she has ceased to exist. There is no abyss into which she has disappeared, no darkness where Love cannot shine. I refused to believe that I was separate from God’s care.
The Bible states, “Now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known”
(I Corinthians 13:12).
When we shift our gaze from matter and its limitations to divine Truth, we begin to see what truly is real. This spiritual sense of Life reveals the presence and power of God, which we reflect as His children.
During that two-week period, I studied Hymn 374 from the Christian Science Hymnal, which reminded me that I had never been separated from God. The third verse begins,
We thank Thee, Father-Mother,
For blessings, light and grace
Which bid mankind to waken
And see Thee face to face.
