Christian Science

So what exactly is Christian Science?

Mary Baker Eddy, in her primary work on the subject – Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures – puts it this way:

“The term CHRISTIAN SCIENCE was introduced by
the author to designate the scientific system of divine

The revelation consists of two parts:

1. The discovery of this divine Science of Mind-
healing, through a spiritual sense of the Scriptures and
through the teachings of the Comforter, as promised by
the Master.

2. The proof, by present demonstration, that the so-
called miracles of Jesus did not specially belong to a
dispensation now ended, but that they illustrated an
ever-operative divine Principle. The operation of this
Principle indicates the eternality of the scientific order
and continuity of being.

Christian Science differs from material science,
but not on that account is it less scientific. On the contrary,
Christian Science is pre-eminently scientific,
being based on Truth, the Principle of all science.” (S&H 123)

Some people think it’s neither Christian nor Science. But that’s because they usually looking at both terms from a material point of view.

And that’s not all that surprising because most people tend to think the universe is just a random organization of matter, governed in general by physical laws that we only somewhat understand through the physical senses and sciences. Meanwhile, we seem to live lives subject to random – and not so random – acts of violence, sin, disease, death.

Sometimes our thoughts of God are equally limited, as if God were up in the sky somewhere, distant from us. Or maybe we think there really is a “God” of some kind out there that intervenes if we’re lucky enough or faithful enough or devout enough and able to push the right “prayer buttons” to get the answer you want.

But Christian Science specifically challenges any ordinary point of view. It presents a radically different sense of who we are and who God is. Instead of just using our five physical senses to understand God, Christian Science awakens us to our spiritual sense. This enables us to understand Him, not just believe in Him. Everyone has this “spiritual sense”, this intuitive recognition of good. And it is that intuition that awakens us to God. It shows us that God is real, alive, and is present with us. Right here. Right now.

We can begin to understand this by shifting our perspective from a materialistic view of ourselves and our world, to a spiritual view. Christian Science reveals the truth that we are completely spiritual. And we are called to wake up and live and be how God, Spirit, makes us in His image.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote it this way:

“A mortal, corporeal, or finite conception of God cannot embrace the glories of limitless, incorporeal Life and Love. Hence the unsatisfied human craving for something better, higher, holier, than is afforded by a material belief in a physical God and man….

“Man is more than a material form with a mind inside, which must escape from its environments in order to be immortal. Man reflects infinity, and this reflection is the true idea of God. God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing itself, broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis.” Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 258: 1-15

If we live in a valley, your perspective is relatively limited. But if we climb out of the valley and up the mountainside, our view of the world expands enormously.

So it is with Christian Science. “The terms Divine Science, Spiritual Science, Christ
Science or Christian Science, or Science alone, she employs interchangeably, according to the requirements of the context. These synonymous terms stand for everything relating to God, the in-
finite, supreme, eternal Mind. It may be said, however, that the term Christian Science relates especially to Science as applied to humanity. Christian Science reveals God, not as the author of sin, sickness, and death, but as divine Principle, Supreme Being, Mind, exempt from all evil. It teaches that matter is the falsity, not the fact, of existence; that nerves, brain, stomach, lungs, and so forth, have — as matter — no intelligence, life, nor sensation.” (S&H 127)

It is Christian, because, as Jesus did, it leads you out of the valley of sin, disease, and death and up the mountainside of spiritual growth. And it is Science, because that spiritual growth is the outcome of learning and practicing the actual spiritual law of God – the understanding of the same practical spiritual Truth that Christ Jesus lived and taught his followers.

So come along. Walk up this mountainside of spiritual discovery with us. It may be an uphill journey, but with Christian Science to light the way, the view will be glorious!
